We are rolling out a new Health & Hygiene unit for 6th-8th grade (180) students, within the Health Wellness subject area. They have never received formal education on their bodies and physical health. This unit will directly impact students physical health, self-esteem, attendance, academics, and future objectives. Many parents in our low-income community save money for students' uniforms, meals at home, and other basic needs. Hygiene products often don't get purchased. We won't to support out students by providing them a health kit. We can't expect our students to practice health habits if they don't have the supplies to do so. The health kit will allow students to begin practicing healthy habits now, in their daily life. Soap will encourage showering daily. Deodorant will bring awareness to their changing bodies, and increase need to take care of body odor. Toothbrush and toothpaste will give them the tools they may not have at home to take care of oral hygiene. Teaching healthy hygiene habits are part of a holistic education we hope to provide for our students.
