This year, I'm hoping to focus on FOCUS! Being alert, oriented toward a particular topic, and exerting effortful control to learn something new is what 'working memory' is all about. Teachers can't expand a student's capacity to remember, but we can alter conditions to make the short term memory work. Short term memory is the precursor of long term memory! Interleaving topics with frequent, low stakes questioning helps embed knowledge even more! Getting students DOING activities quickly gets them engaged in selecting, holding, reorganizing and combining information! My class of 2nd and 3rd grade gifted students will be challenged to grow academically as well as socially and emotionally within a growth mindset. I will strive to create a safe space for young learners to make many mistakes, to be good classmates, citizens and friends.
