I teach in a high-poverty area - where 95-98% of the children qualify for free lunch. Parental involvement is getting somewhat better, but it is still very low. Transient rate across the school system is high, so we have kids in and out, bouncing between different schools. Most of my kids do not have lots of background knowledge from real-life situations, because they lack real-life experiences. Most of the students need someone to help them understand the value of a good education, and that is my job as their teacher. I have the professional responsibility of following set standards and reaching certain data-driven goals. I also have a personal responsibility to raise self-expectations and self-respect of my students. I want them to be eager to learn... to look for solutions on how to solve problems... I want to feed their little heads!
