My Kinder emerging bilingual students come from different Spanish speaking countries like El Salvador, Mexico, and Honduras. Many are the first in their families to attend public school in the United States. Half of my students attend preschool and the other half show up to Kinder for their 1st school experience. Many live with extended family members due to the Bay Area's high costs of living. My students receive free school meals and qualify for after school programs. They are learning the basics in literacy and Math in Kinder and especially need support from the community to boost their motivation and engagement with school. My school has about 550 students from working class and immigrant backgrounds. We have a Spanish pathway from K to 5th grades. Our school is as diverse as the city of SF with multiple languages and cultures coming together to learn.
