I am so proud of my superstar dance students. More important than any movements, they have learned and shared over the past year, is the community we have co-created on our pillars of culture, creativity, confidence, and shared celebration. Teaching dance via zoom has been no easy task, particularly for the many students whom have had no experience prior to joining the dance program. Still, students show up daily with energy and a readiness to learn. There has been a lengthy gap between myself and the previous full-time dance teacher. So, I am excited to breathe new life into the dance program, which had not included ballet and contemporary in previous years. Our dance program is rooted in cultural and creative expression that is reflective of my personal and professional experience as well as that of the community. Currently, we have been enjoying learning fundamentals of jazz, hip hop, modern, traditional west African, and salsa. However, ballet has been a technique we have been unable to explore deeply because of a lack of proper equipment. During distance learning, we have dabbled with basic barre work using chairs. I look forward to treating our deserving and hardworking students to proper equipment when they return to in-person instruction.
