My students are given choice-based time each week to explore materials, techniques and subject matters of their choosing. A calm happiness flows through our classroom as students explore art on their terms. I have had a 7th grade student create a series of embroidered fabrics with messages about autism awareness. A group of kindergarteners spent several choice-based art days constructing kites from found materials for their "kite store." A third grade artist studied photos of underwater animals and rendered three dimensional versions of them using folded and rolled paper. I believe that the art room should be a place where students are regarded as artists and can explore their own interests and ideas through making art. I want to provide more tools and supplies for my students to create with. Stamps, stencils, molding beeswax, building supplies, wooden mannequins and instructional books are some of the materials I would like to have available to these budding artists. These tools will allow them more opportunities to respond to their ideas, dream bigger, and gain more independence in their art making practice. Thank you for helping me elevate our art room into a more engaging choice-focused space!
