My first graders have an abundant amount of energy. I dabbled in flexible seating this year with inexpensive flexible seating options. These were great and my students really enjoyed them, but inexpensive things tend to fall apart very easily! Flexible seating increases student engagement, movement, and comfort. I believe that theses materials can help my students succeed in the classroom and keep them fully engaged in their learning. It would also allow them to be able to change location or positions throughout the day. My students spend eight hours a day, five days a week in my classroom. That's almost as much time as they spend at home! A classroom should be just as comfortable as a student's home and unfortunately some of my students do not have the luxury of a comfortable home, so I would love to give them that comfort eight hours a day, five days a week in my classroom. Research states that students need to move the amount of minutes that equals their age. For example, a six year old needs to move every six minutes. If my project is funded, my students will be able to use the wobble chairs when completing their classroom assignments or station work and be able to move as they work. The Bouncy Bands would incorporate movement during seat work as well. I have seen students use the bands around their chairs and you can see that it really motivates them to think and continue to work, as they are getting their wiggles out. Having different options also gives students a choice of what kind of flexible seating works best for them and they feel as if their classroom is in fact actually theirs.
