Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and gives them a sense of ownership within the classroom. Students can choose a place within the classroom to work during independent work time along with the flexible seating option that works for them. Currently, my students pick a variety of locations and options within the classroom to work such as laying or sitting on the carpet with clipboards, sitting at different tables, or on the floor with a lap desk. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. When students are given a choice, I've seen amazing differences in their work. They almost always make good choices about where to sit, are more engaged in the tasks, and get more work done than when they just sit at their desks.
