My students need a class set of the amazing novels City of Ember and People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. These two novels will serve multiple purposes for my students. My students need the first two City of Ember books to encourage individuality, teach empathy and promote a sense of community with our diverse learners. The City of Ember is an empowering novel for adolescents. It inspires courage and encourages students to be brave in their individuality, instead of accepting the social norms placed upon them. These are vital lessons that are difficult to teach to students. City of Ember is an interesting and exciting read that students will engage in. People of Sparks will help my homeless students in various ways. By 5th grade, students are very self conscious and socially aware, but unfortunately not always empathic or understanding. My job is to teach them how to treat others. Imagine going through this difficult time while also being displaced from your home. People of Sparks will help my homeless students create genuine text to self connections. This novel will also teach my class of students empathy for those who are displaced and homeless, which will help support a sense of classroom community. Please consider helping my students get these amazing books that will inspire hope in those whose situations feel hopeless.
