Research shows that cognitive functions significantly improve with movement. The elliptical pedals, special mats and seats can help break up students' day. In this classroom we work hard, with long periods of instruction and challenging content. Students need and benefit from the opportunity to practice short breaks of mindfulness and yoga on mats or special seats. Physical movement also promotes focus such as the under desk elliptical pedals. These practices work to improve executive functioning by promoting self regulation of attention, impulsivity control and transitional flexibility between subjects and topics. These self awareness skills use breathing and movement to calm and recenter students' focus on their learning.
