Two major factors have negatively impacted the ability of my students to receive a high-quality music education: 1) a lack of long-term investment in the arts by previous school administrations, and 2) an absence of culturally relevant educational methods to reach an incredibly diverse and multicultural/multilingual community. These instruments will help solve both of those problems by granting my students quality, world music instruments with which to perform!
With the right combination of instruments, we can help this underserved community develop a positive relationship with their school and neighborhood through world music performance! In my classroom, students will perform music styles from around the world, with a primary focus on Latin American and African drumming and folk music. Over the course of the school year, students will learn rhythms and melodies associated with specific world regions, boosting their understanding of cultural and geographical learning objectives both in this class and in their social science classes.
As an ethnomusicology-trained teacher with experience in a variety of world music ensembles, I know the value of culturally-relevant music and performance in strengthening student outcomes in all content areas.
Thank you for supporting this project and our musicians!
