Most of my students read several grades below what is considered "proficient." They need high interest, challenging literature to keep them reading. One of the things that we do NOT have in my classroom is current, exciting fiction. I have brought in things from home, freebies from other teachers, and anything else that I can get my hands on. My English students need to have positive reading experiences with their peers, and rich guided discussions about main point, theme, and figurative language. Literature circles are a great way to incorporate these things.
