Students will have opportunities to read the latest SSYRA Books. Exposure to these titles will motivate students to enjoy reading, and become fluent readers by competing to read them all in a school year. Their reading experiences will ripple throughout the year as we engage in project-based learning, book clubs and read alouds. I'm requesting a variety of books including The Great Treehouse War, Heartwood Hotel, I Love You, Michael Collins, The BFG, and A Wrinkle in Time. Titles like, "Wish" by Barbara O'Connor are relevant to the struggles our students are encountering today. Reading material that students can relate to will entice their interest, inspire them to continue reading, and develop higher level reading skills. Students will begin to notice varying styles of writing by particular authors which will trickle into their own writing. Second and third grade standards lend way for students to compare and contrast elements within stories. For instance, after reading "Wish" and "The Sweetest Sound" by Sherri Winston, students can engage in a character study by digging into the characters actions, reactions and ultimately discover how the characters drive the story. Utilizing books from the SSYRA allows me as the teacher to present quality reading for my students. I want to expose them to models of good writing, varying types of writing, and allow them to take ownership of their own reading, writing, and learning.
