Using Trauma Sensitive Practices in the classroom require students to take frequent breaks for which I have created "Break Baskets" for each classroom in our school. The students can take a 5 minute break (timers are in the basket) either in the classroom or right outside the classroom in their common area (the Pod) by using an item in the basket. My students also use fidgets, squiggle pads for the chairs, and yoga balls I have ordered to help reduce stress and anxiety these students frequently feel.
My students use the mindful water bead timers in our music class. They calm our students and have been a great tool for our music teacher to use in his class. These are more sturdy than the ones we made ourselves last year.
The use and guidelines are taught to students/staff on how to use these items effectively. In addition, I have added a few books addressing common behavior issues and some curriculum on self-regulation of behavior that works together with these trauma sensitive practices. My data shows these have been effective in helping the students remain in class, head-off potential melt-downs, and aide in students self monitor behavior.
