Students become successful at using alternative methods of communication and expression when people in their environment frequently teach, practice and use core vocabulary and words with recognizable picture symbols. My students need repeated exposure to core vocabulary words in order to use them independently and to eventually become motivated to work on more complex language skills. My non-verbal and minimally verbal students must show proficiency in recognizing and using picture symbols to be eligible for an assistive technology device -- from a battery operated two-cell device to a tablet with an advanced language. I am asking for two copies of each book in order to simultaneously target core words through literacy with the teacher and during group activities/instructional time. These are some of the words I will target with the books requested: hi, bye, bathroom, yes, no, wow, help, more, finished, stop, go, me, open, and again. I am also asking for ink and laminating sheets to be able to give children, staff, and families protected color copies of the targeted vocabulary words. The binder rings and bins will be used for storing and organizing books/materials.
