It is my goal to utilize culturally responsive books that depict relevant social issues of our times. Additionally, I would like to use books written by authors of color who showcase characters of color that depart from negative stereotypes and exemplify outstanding characteristics. I will use the Just Mercy book to open up discussions about our present day criminal justice system and the areas that need to reform. Ultimately, my students will write an argument essay, utilizing evidence from the text of whether we should continue to use the death penalty. They will also write a persuasive essay about what aspects of the criminal justice needs to be reformed and propose solutions to the problems. These books will help my students understand the world around them and help them see themselves as change agents. Additionally, this book will help my students gain a broader worldview, while increasing their empathy and agency to make a difference.
