Our school is a Title 1 school, in which majority of our students receive free lunch. My students are challenged and average readers that are more engaged in using technology for fun and games then academic learning. Many of the parents have a language other than English as their primary fluent language, therefore, additional support from home may be a barrier. They have to be motivated to attempt new things in reading, as well as given incentives to encourage them to persevere and build stamina. Often times allowing them to compete with others, pushes them to try harder. It also fosters teamwork and build social skills. Which are two problems for most of our challenged readers. They are frustrated with their limited comprehension and really find it hard to trust others. They often use their behavior as a barrier for covering the reading deficiency. With a strong teacher and student relationship with involved parents, our students often show individual improvement in reading.
