I have super cool kids from all ethnicities and economic levels in a large urban city. The rockers all love some genre of popular music. I guide them through 60 years of popular music history as rock bands. In order to take the stage they have to have a C average in all of their classes. We learn rock and keep our grades up too! The symphony orchestra that I lead at our high school is unique in that we play not just the classic eras of orchestral music. We learn multiple genres of music from Bach to Rock, including Hollywood Film Scores and American roots music. I attempt to encourage my students to perform together in their musical ensembles and learn to play music that opens the heart of the listener, the mind of the performer and the souls of everyone.
