I teach in Louisiana at a public school that would be considered low income. Many of our students come from single family homes. Because of this, books may not be a priority purchase. After Hurricane Katrina, many of their homes were destroyed. The books that they may have had are no longer there. Our classroom library serves as a replacement. They are allowed to check out out books and take them home to share with their parents. My students love our classroom library and the listening center in it. They spend a large amount of time using the materials in it. Although they cannot read, they love to peruse the books and pretend that they are are reading.
