I am the proud teacher of a primary grade self-contained special education classroom at a public school in a high-poverty, urban area in Illinois. Books are something that these children do not get exposed to at home. My students are an adorable bunch of quirky personalities and curious minds. In a large K-8 school, my classroom is in a corner of the building where students feel safe, accepted, and welcome. Usually by the time students are referred to me, they have endured a lot of failure and misunderstanding in the general education classroom. It is my job to create a space that allows them plenty of room for self-expression, growth, and fun! The progress my students have made by being in a classroom that is catered to their unique needs and learning styles is tremendous, and I look forward to what the rest of our time together produces.
