Recently, I took on the challenge of working with students in an urban school setting located in an impoverished portion of the District of Columbia. The students attend high school in one of the older buildings where up to date resources have not yet become available. Despite these disadvantages, they still strive to learn and reach academic goals. My students want to know why they are learning the skills I am teaching. They want to see how the skills relate to them and where they live. This is their first year in high school, so everything is extremely different for them in this "big new environment". They see things that are old, and want to know how they can make a change. My students are still inquisitive, anxious to learn, and ready for challenges. Their minds are wide open for the knowledge I am excited about giving them.
