Student engagement is increased when students have choices in what they read. Small-group literature circles with titles and content that appeals to my students is imperative. Groups of two students who are accountable to each other and highly engaged in their reading will drive an improvement in reading ability and reading stamina. These novels will help me provide novels that address the needs of my students while simultaneously provide them with characters with which they can truly connect. When so much is focused on the standardized test, it is my hope that this connection will create a group of life-long readers.
