My students face a unique challenge when it comes to learning to read and write. Autistic children require several times the repetition of information and learn to read by memorizing. These items will help them create and not just remember word orders. Kindergarten is usually the students first experience with reading and writing. Tools such as shirt triangular pencils help with those fine motor skills that can be challenging to first time writers. They will learn the foundations of phonemic awareness by using the mirrors and phones to make connections with letter sounds. Building the letters using a variety of sensory items such as colorful popsicle sticks. These foundations will exponentially increase with right materials. Once they have mastered letter sounds, building on their sight words using fun centers such as popcorn word games, will allow these students to not only read and write but communicate their needs and build more sentences. The social/emotional books will allow them to make connections about how they can express themselves when they are having trouble with a transition.
