It's imperative for students to be able to analyze and interpret data as a 21st century skill. In my science class, students in the past have created many graphs throughout the year. This year is no exception. For instance, they will be expected to graph their grades so that they are constantly aware of how they are doing academically. They will collect results from classroom experiments and then use that data by displaying it in an appropriate graph. Previously, students presented data through self generated graphs on graph paper. To advance students in technology use, they need to be able to create computerized graphs and use up to date technology. It's one thing to put the data on paper but it's a completely different approach incorporating that information into a computer. Chromebooks provide Google Classroom programs that are user friendly for students. One such program is Google sheets in which information can be input and displayed in a graphing format. One of the bonuses for using Google Classroom is that once a student has entered the information, there is no need to save anything. It's automatically done and the student can pick up where he/she left off. Students gain a better understanding of the scientific process by performing the experiment themselves. An important step in that process is sharing the results with others. Providing access to a computer and hands-on opportunities in displaying their findings effectively through a professional looking graph, is not only engaging but also allows the students to build their technological skills. It further provides a sense of healthy confidence.
