Class sets of a text that brings in an important cultural voice are invaluable. My students need to see themselves reflected in the curriculum beyond the history of French colonialism or the Vietnam War, and 'The Best We Could Do' brings in multiple points of view from the Vietnamese perspective. It lends itself to discussions, writing, research, and self-reflections built around the subjects of generational differences, immigration, government, family, navigating cultural norms, and so many more important ideas. Incorporating a typically underrepresented culture into Multicultural Literature is crucial. The graphic novel style will also help reluctant and struggling readers connect, and will bring concepts that may be unfamiliar to stuents to life. I look forward to the Socratic Seminar and personal narrative that I have planned for this unit, and challenging students to reflect on how their families' choices have brought them to where they are, as well as to contemplate their own upbringings in the context of the choices they make as young adults about to enter the world independently!
