My school is located in one of the lowest income areas in our school district. Many of the students also come from stressful home life situations that include single-parent and multi-family households. Some students even classify as homeless. Couple these stressors with the weight of the current global pandemic, and it is easy to understand why so many students are displaying anxious behaviors at school. These behaviors manifest as fidgeting/restlessness, unwarranted outbursts, and poor concentration on daily activities. As a counselor, I have seen the benefits of weighted blanket therapy as a way to reduce anxiety, and I would love to introduce this concept to the students at my campus. The product I am requesting provides deep touch pressure for a calming effect that helps with concentration and focus. My goal is when students are feeling anxious, this will provide some comfort and help them have a successful school day!
