Most, about 80 to 85 percent, of a school counselor's time should be spent in direct student support. This includes classroom lessons, small groups, and individual student counseling. Curriculum such as "Building Champions" and "Starbound" focus on building students with positive character qualities, resiliency, and empathy and will help me maximize the number of students who can benefit from counseling support by focusing on classroom lessons and weekly small groups. Using books such as "Tattle Tongue" and "Tease Monster" helps students learn and practice valuable social skills that contribute to positive friendships and effective communication with their peers. Games like "Mad Dragon" can help students deal with negative emotions or deescalate during challenges without disciplinary consequences.
