Our school is unique. We have a very diverse population. Some students live in Section 8 housing and are on food stamps. However, some students live in million dollar homes. Sadly, more and more of the students living in million dollar homes are declining and the amount of Section 8 kids is increasing. For the 18 years that I have been teaching, I have noticed students needing more movement in their learning. Watching my students this year, I noticed only 2 really used the traditional desk for their work. Everyone else stretched out on the floor or sat on pillows. They seem to thrive on movement and choice. My students pay attention more when I remove them from their desks and allow them to stand around the room or sit on the floor. When at their desks, they tend to play and be more off task. Our school is really shifting to a project based learning school. A room with alternative seating would allow for us to fuel this thinking with collaboration and imagination.
