One of the themes of our studies this year will be empathy. Sixth graders feel strongly, and the pandemic has affected students in such varying degrees, so understanding and developing personal empathy will be a great tool for living well in their communities. Firegirl by Tony Abbott is a sweet story with a main character who processes and develops his own empathy towards a peer and friend throughout the story. Funding this project will provide each student with their own copy of the book so that we are able to read it together both inside and outside of class time. Reading this story together will foster great dialogue among the students about empathy, regardless of whether we're learning in a hybrid or full distance learning model.
