When my students hear the word book, they instantly think "boring". They think pages and pages of words they might not understand and settings nowhere like they currently live. Well, that's what I want them to learn to love about reading... widening their understanding and introducing them to worlds they never knew existed. I've found the best way to hook middle school kids is by inviting them to solve a mystery; allowing them to use what they already know and linking them to what they learn in the story to make inferences, which are the keys to critical thinking. It was in 6th grade that I learned that the power of a book was to allow me to explore the world around me or help me discover a whole new world, and I want to do the same for my students. Allowing them to own their own copies of the novel Loot will allow them to connect to the story in ways they might not have before by annotating... a strategy that deepens the reading experience and helps to creates lifelong learners.
