With the new Literacy Act that has been passed in the state of Alabama, it is more important now that ever to have students come into a kindergarten classroom more prepared to see the words they have heard put into print. Language starts as listening, and then progresses into reading. Reading books to children can help encourage vocabulary. Children who have had 5 books a day read to them will start kindergarten knowing over 1 million words more than students who have not been read to. Knowing these statistics, it is intimidating to early childhood teachers to help close the gap since standards are growing more rigorous, and class sizes are increasing. I am trying to fund a solution to help this gap. I am requesting to order 5 iPad minis in my classroom to start this project. I cannot physically read to students one on one when they have free time or independent time in the classroom. However, I can record myself reading a story and have students access it and other read alouds through a QR code. In utilizing this, students are watching print concepts, tracking print, listening to vocabulary words, and building background knowledge all while others are finishing their work or receiving extra instructional support from me. I can also utilize the iPads to have students record themselves reading so I can have documentation of their fluency progressions, and I can access it at any time. Lastly, while utilizing the SeeSaw app, students can journal and submit their work to me to analyze, document, and even share with families. I feel having these iPads can help bridge the language gap among students, increasing their capability for success in literacy at a young age! I hope you can please donate to our cause.
