I am a first year teacher at a very diverse school in Washington State. Over half of our students are considered English Language Learners(ELL), which means that they are not fully proficient in English. Aside from the high population of ELL students, 87% of our total student population qualify for free and reduced lunches. My students are motivated to read but the lack of school funding prevents us from having a stimulating classroom library. My students enjoy non-fiction books which expose them to new vocabulary. Most students in my classroom come from low-income backgrounds and do not have these resources at home.
