I am the 7-12 English Language Arts teacher at a small Native American school, located in a rural setting on Lake Superior. A large proportion of the student population comes from economically disadvantaged families and is affected by cycles of generational poverty. Due to our size and location, the curriculum is limited, but we are fortunate in that we offer a Performing Arts class to our juniors and seniors. Performing Arts/Art allows our students to explore their creative sides and experience all aspects of putting on live performances and art exhibits. In Performing Arts, students are responsible for planning and building sets, designing costumes, collecting props, and handling the technical and promotional aspects of theater. In Art class, students use their imaginations in creating projects that incorporate various art forms and the native culture and hold an exhibit to show off their work.
