In my 7th grade classroom, we are working to move from passive learning to active thinking. This is a major hurdle for many of my students; they often struggle to put their thoughts on paper or find the confidence to share ideas out loud. To help them focus, I need to eliminate basic distractions. It is hard to stay on task when you are hungry or lack tools. By providing pencils and granola bars, I ensure these needs don't stop the learning. We are also adding a hygiene station. Middle school brings physical changes, and "the funk" is a real distraction for the whole class. Having deodorant and wipes on hand allows us to handle this quickly so students can focus on each other's ideas rather than smells. My goal is to provide the basics so they can do the hard work of thinking.
