The materials requested in this project will be used specifically for small group instruction in both reading in math. Teaching in small groups allows me to work more closely with each student on a specific learning objective, reinforce skills learned in the whole group instruction, and check for their understanding. I selected the reading comprehension kits to use with my students to build their comprehension readiness by providing materials that are specific to the different standards, such as identifying the main idea, comparing and contrasting and comparing complex text. In addition, the intervention reading kit is designed to be used to help my struggling students who need additional support in specific skills. Both kits will be used during small group instruction, after I complete whole group instruction. For mathematics, I chose a kit that provides practice in solving problems using different strategies. Students often get stuck with one method and I desire to have them think of various ways of problem solving. Finally, I have requested comparing fraction flipcharts so my students will have a hands-on approach and visual display to help them understand how fractions can be compared. Both items will be used during mathematics instruction during whole and small groups. Using a small group approach gives my students more of my focused attention and a chance to ask specific questions about what they learned or need assistance with. Small-group instruction offers an environment for me to provide students extensive opportunities to express what they know and receive feedback from other students and me. Instructional conversations are easier to conduct and support with a small group of students
