I teach choir at two middle schools in my district. I have a total of 124 students, grades 6-8. We live in Alaska, a very unique and beautiful place. While my students are also unique and beautiful, they are still typical middle school kids - their lives are saturated with pop culture and social media. They want to sing the coolest songs, by the most current artists. "Why do we have to sing in Latin??!" "I've never even heard this song before!" But when I can show them the beauty and artistry in other types of music, they start appreciating music, history, and the world around them.
