Our Chick Inn began with 5 chickens. Because of incredible volunteers and our fabulous students, we now have 16 chickens—and expanded needs for their habitat and diet. This project will increase the sustainability of our chicken program project and greatly improve the chicken diet. We hope to develop a mealworm breeding program as well as to build and maintain grazing boxes for the chickens. We will learn about mealworms, their habitats and life cycle and provide a nutritious addition to the chicken feed. We plan to make grazing boxes which allow the chickens to graze on weeds and plants without destroying the root systems. Chickens will also be able to safely snack on appropriate weeds and scraps from our garden projects. Students in our entire school would benefit from learning about sustainable farming and the science behind planning animal diets and nutrition.
