I am requesting professional development that will provide me with the tools and strategies I can use to assist me with providing a safe place for my students to want to learn. English Language Arts/ Reading is the content area that I focus on; however, my students are not motivated due to issues ranging from not being able to read, to distractions in their poverty stricken neighborhood. The key lies with Social Emotional Learning. Academic achievement is nearly impossible if students and teachers do not build relationships, and do not connect on interpersonal levels. Attending professional development at a school that specializes in building up students, while excelling, would enhance my skill set. The knowledge that I gain, I will be able to be put to use immediately, and I can readily share the strategies I learn with my colleagues to make a greater impact.
