My students are the most amazing and talented young people you will ever meet. They are funny, charismatic, and perceptive of the world around them. I know middle school students are not always the easiest students to work with but they are my favorite group of students to teach and there is never a day when I am not happy to see them. Our school is a young charter school located in a tough neighborhood in Pennsylvania. Many of our students come from this neighborhood which is riddled with crime, poverty, drugs, etc. Many of our students are also immigrants. Our students face many challenges to make it in this world. However, our school is trying to empower them to be positive leaders in their community and to be active learners with high academic expectations. One way I hope to do this is by opening their eyes to new experiences and different ways of thinking through literature and in the process, help them become better readers.
