My English Language Development kindergarten classroom is made up of 17 diverse 5 and 6 year olds in a southern Arizona Title I school. 99% are on free and reduced lunch. More than 1/2 of my students are Hispanic, the rest are refugees from Africa, Asia and the Middle East and all come from low-income households. The majority live in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. Their parents don't have the monies to provide them with hands on toys like blocks. Kindergarten is no longer just for social and emotional development. My students spend most of their days doing math and literacy to prepare them to think and problem solve and succeed in their future world. They're expected to sit the greater part of the day on academics. They have very little time for active "free play" at school or home, so it's very important that they have daily opportunities to explore kindergarten appropriate activities.
