Creating an environment that helps my students make choices that enhance their learning is every teachers dream. Flexible seating is a great way to get students engaged and making good choices when it comes to their academics. When students walk into my classroom they feel more at ease knowing they are not required to sit in a desk, or sit in an assigned area. When they enter the classroom they are free to make the choice that best suits their needs. Currently I do not have many options for my students to engage in flexible seating. My students have lowered a few of the desks and opted to sit on the floor, while others take turns sitting in the one comfy chair I have in my classroom, or lay on the floor while doing their work on a hard surface ( book or one of the few clipboards we have). Giving my students the choice to sit where they would like in my classroom has not only motivated them, but allowed them to become more focused and engaged when doing both independent work and group work. Making my students feel more at home and comfortable has made a tremendous difference in their decision making and overall academic achievement. I have chosen the following items for my classroom, because it will give my students a variety of options when it comes to flexible seating versus our current options (laying/sitting on the floor, 1 chair, or desks). The clipboards can be used as a hard writing surface while sitting in the chairs/couch/floor rather than being constricted to a desk. Each of these items allows for movement as well as help us grow positively when making choices. Thank you! :)
