These books form the basis for a collaborative, interdisciplinary project designed by the 8th grade team teachers at BMS. Students will participate in literature circles and examine how characters become change agents based on an environmental problem in their respective communities. They will explore the scientific and historic ideas underpinning the storylines and examine the effect humans have on nature. After discussing how youth can have a positive impact on the world around them, students will have the opportunity to do so themselves. Students will select an issue of environmental significance in Maine, conduct research, and develop a proposal advocating for change. Finally, they will creatively present their work in a school-wide Exhibition of Learning.
