Students need to see themselves pictured in literature. As our world becomes increasingly aware of populations that feel marginalized, it is important to represent all ethnicities. Children of different backgrounds need to see themselves represented in order that they not feel unimportant. White children need to be exposed to other cultures in order to become aware and educated. By adding more ethnically diverse titles to our school library, we can ensure that our students are aware and educated about our diverse world. These books will be accessible by the entire school population (teachers and students alike). Our student population is diverse; our teachers progressive in their support and we already strive to offer diverse literature. This grant will add more diverse titles to our library in an attempt boost the number of diverse rich books available to our students. With the cost of books increasing and our library budgets decreasing, it becomes more difficult to add significant numbers of titles.
