I chose this book because it is relates to what is happening in our world today. I would like to introduce authentic literature that the students can read in a book form instead of just using the laptop or iPad. I want students to learn about other cultures and how people live. This book is about a child who crosses the boarder (in the 1940's) with his family to work in farms. This is the first in a series of twelve (published in 1997) autobiographical stories by Santa Clara University professor Francisco Jiménez, who at the age of four illegally crossed the border with his family in 1947. "The Circuit," is one of the most widely anthologized stories in Chicano literature. Author Jiménez offers more about the wise, sensitive little boy who has grown into a role model for subsequent generations of immigrants. It is my hope that this book will inspire students to love reading nonfiction literature, and have compassion for children of other cultures.
