We severely lack the instrumentation we need to give our students the band experience they deserve. The school has owned a small group of instruments for many years but they have never been put to use. If my project is fully funded, it will add to my band inventory and give more students the opportunity to learn an instrument. My goal is to grow a band program that will be accessible to as many students as possible and give them an opportunity to play an instrument of their choosing. The students will not be able to choose the instrument that fits them best if their options are limited.
As a flute performance major myself, it is upsetting that I only have 6 flutes in my inventory for my 240 students. Learning to play the flute in my own middle school band class transformed my life, and I only want my own students to have that same opportunity. Expanding my number of flutes would also create a balanced band instrumentation. Woodwinds are delicate instruments, and the cheap models I have cannot withstand the wear and tear of being shared by my students all day.
A long term goal for my program is for every student to have their own instrument, but right now we do not even have one class set for my 10 classes to share, let alone enough for my program to bring home and practice. We need to build a band inventory, starting with our severely lacking woodwind section. The instruments purchased with your donation will go into the hands of an enthusiastic flute player immediately, making a significant impact on the life of a young Bronx musician.
