For continued reading success, children need to have access to books at home to read, after they leave school. The majority of the parents can not afford to buy books for their children; many family members are illiterate or have very low literacy skills. This project is designed to improve the connection of literacy at school to continued literacy at home by sending books home in a durable book bag to transfer literacy materials to and from school. A student's backpack can be the only personal place that they have at home to keep their belongings. At second grade students are slowly learning the importance of compartmentalizing, and a special book bag just for literature will help each student stay organized for reading. The school to home book bags are designed to provide children the opportunity to take home books from the classroom. Well worn, dog eared books are well loved books and these books along with each student's daily reading log will be protected, and easy to access in their backpacks.
