A year ago, the Ceramics students made up of students in grades 9-12, decided to create soup bowls and host their own Empty Bowls Soup Event. An Empty Bowls event serves both to raise awareness about poverty and raise money for a local charity.
Throughout the semester, students create bowls using handmade tools and the potters wheel. The bowls will be donated to the Empty Bowls Soup Event held at the end of the semester which benefits the local food pantries within our school district.
The Ceramics students really take on the role of the leader for the event. They advertise the event, create flyers and handouts for the community. They then work the event for the whole evening which is a great community service event.
The school opens its doors to the community for help raising funds for the local food pantries by selling the bowls for $10. The bowls are empty but the cafeteria and student-led Food Science Classes make delicious homemade soups for the consumers.
It becomes quite an artistic event, as our chorus and band students do performances for entertainment.
Our building has one potters wheel so our students are strapped with creating bowls on the wheel. We would love to make our event larger than in the past and additional potters wheels would help the students tremendously.
In addition, the wheels would be used in all the Art II, Sculpture and Art I classes as well. They certainly would be put to good use.
