In 2016, our elementary school started an in-person sign language club to give hearing students an opportunity to learn how to communicate with their Deaf peers. The club also gave our Deaf students an opportunity to be subject matter experts as they took on leadership roles in the club. Our club has since changed its format from an in-person club to an online club that gives students the opportunity to not only learn at their own pace, but in some cases, it has become a family affair as parents learn alongside their child expanding the signing community to our local city. For students who are not ready to make that commitment, our new school monitors expose students and staff to basic signs modeled by our Deaf students. Our Deaf students and our local Deaf adults appreciate our school offering this language learning opportunity to our staff, students, and families.
