Some of my students came to this country with only the clothes on their back; they spend their hours after school working to support their family. Books are absent from the home and reading for fun is the last thing on their minds. Getting modern fiction and nonfiction novels that will excite and engage low performing or reluctant students is so important. When they are able to find a book they love, they are able to see a world outside of their own. A classroom full of new books is like a world full of new possibilities. When these students enter my room for the first time, I want them to see an opportunity to learn in every corner. I will use these books to show students a way to love (or at least not hate) reading. We have closets full of the old, traditional texts that high schoolers "should read." But what's the chance of getting a student who has never read anything to open up Pride and Prejudice? They need a jumping off point. These exciting YA Novels will be just that. They will be the gateway to a future of literacy for these children.
