In my 8th grade Language Arts class, students spend the first ten minutes of class reading a book of their choice specific to a genre, theme, or focus for the month. Language Arts lessons are taught in conjunction with their book selections to boost buy-in and giving students a say in what they are most interested in reading. They enter middle school as enthusiastic readers, but reading easily sinks as a priority compared to their busy schedules. It is crucial to combat this, and providing students with independent reading choices in school now helps to build a culture of lifelong readers and writers. If we want to create a new generation of engaged readers, we need to get engaging, high-interest books featuring real characters and real conflicts into the hands of our middle school students. By broadening the availability of books in my classroom library, students will have an abundant choice of contemporary, engaging plots to select one that interests them. Our students are ready to tackle the future, so we need to partner with them by providing texts that represent today.
